A little bit about echo13:
Last year I did a college photography project on my father, who is in the fire department here in Cape Town.
At the same time, my father was organising an exercise called “Back to the Floor”, where those firefighters who didn’t see much action and floor time, got to team up and take a station over for a shift. This helped with finding things to improve on at stations, as well as give the firefighters on duty at the time, a rest.
Our projects ended up combining, with me then joining and documenting the Back to the Floor exercises.
Its snowballed even more, to the point where I get to join my father when he goes to fires.
The name of the series comes from the call-sign of the pump I get to ride on mostly, during the exercises, E13 or Engine 13.
My echo13 series keeps growing, but it will always remain around the core reason why I started, which is my father…
I realised that due to the vast difference in my documentary work of the fire department (compared to my normal blog images), it needed its own place where people could follow.
So here is the new home of the echo13 series…
